Persian City Carpets and Rugs


Persia has a long history of carpet and rug weaving. Different regions of Persia weave carpets with their own specialty and features. Persia's rich culture, tradition and customs too influenced this art. The patterns and designs were reflective of the traditions and the customs.

Persian city carpets are produced in city workshops. These carpets are named after the city in which they are produced. Though every Persian city rugs and carpets have their own specialty, yet they have many things in common.

Persian City Carpets and RugsThe old Persian carpets are characterized by their intricate patterns and designs. They are embellished with beautiful colors. The fields of the Persian city rugs and carpets are completely covered with different designs of buds and blossoms supported by vines and tendril. Arabesque, which is an Islamic feature, encapsulate these designs to form a harmonious whole.

Modern Persian city carpets use solid color field with central medallions and triangular corners defined by graceful lines. Whole field is filled with beautiful floral designs arranged with studied precision. The borders circumscribing the field contains undulating vines with pendant flowers or palmettes. These motifs not only compliment but also enhance the beauty of the carpets and the rugs.

Shades of blues, reds, browns, and greens are used popularly on these carpets. The color of the motifs, background and the border are kept contrast to highlight their beauty which ultimately gives an attractive look to the entire carpet. The colors also give delicate look to the carpet and are in perfect harmony with each other. Some of the Persian city carpets and rugs instead of using central medallion use an all-over design of repetitive floral icons. As compared to tribal carpets, these carpets have more knots per square inches.
