How Hooked Rugs are Made?
Hooked rugs are manufactured by hooking narrow strips of woolen fabric
into a backing material. Loops are used to form the pile. This is done
by raising the loops above the backing. By hooking shades of varying
colors of wool, designs are formed. Very few of the hooked rugs of the
early period survived today because the backing material used earlier
was of the poor quality and also most of the women saw their rugs
strictly as utilitarian pieces and placed no value on saving them. Once
the manufacturing of rug is completed, a protective backing cloth is
applied. In order to to accentuate the details in the design, many times
rugs are hand carved.

It
is believed that the the practice of rug hooking began in rural New
England during the late 18th Century and took root in Colonial America.
However according to some, the craft of rug hooking can be traced back
to the sixth century when it was practiced by the Copts who were the
ancestors of Egyptian. This art soon became very famous in America but
as a consequent of wars led to the declining of this art in late 1860s.
However in 1930s this craft revived again and is still popular today.
The patterns followed earlier were inspired from the quilts. The common
motives used earlier were horse, house pet, Gay sprays of flowers and
scenes. These designs were bold and simple. A home was very personalized
in this way, especially when it came to pattern and color. The modern
day hooked rugs are available both in classical and contemporary
designs, including traditional, floral patterns, and theme rugs.
Intricate designs and a myriad of colors add a lively, rich look.
