Coir
mats are one of the most environment friendly objects as they are made
of the natural fiber. They are quite innovative in appeal and versatile
in application. Coir is extracted from the outer husk of the coconut
fruit. It is a very strong fiber and very rough too. The fibers cannot
be woven very tightly. Kerala in India and Sri Lanka are famous for
their coir products.
Process
- The coconut husk is removed either mechanically or manually
- The husk is ground, long fibers are retted and spun to convert to
yarn
- The yarn can be hand spun or be spun on the spinning wheel
- The yarn is dyed if not required in natural color
- The yarn is then woven in the required shape and pattern
- Coir mats are made on handlooms, power looms or frames
- They may have latex/rubber backing that makes the mats non-slip
Design
The designs can be printed, inlaid or flocked. Designs are simple yet
attractive. They are most suitable as doormats for indoors as well as
out doors. The natural color of coir is golden brown to reddish brown,
but it can be dyed. Coir mats and carpets are used for their decorative
appeal.
Using Coir Carpets and Mats
Coir mats and carpets are most suitable for room accents, door decor,
foot mats and outdoor utility. They have rather limited utility because
of its roughness and loose knit texture. They dry fast and can be placed
in patios, near the bathrooms or in the swimming pool areas, though it
is not advisable to walk on a coir mat bare foot.
