Carpet base is a latest development in the
flooring industry, which is used to replace the once popular vinyl
(cove) base. It has a function of stuffing under it. The use of a carpet
base improves the insulation characteristics and reduces its wear due to
the walks on the carpet. A carpet base also helps in protecting the
appearance of a carpet and gives it a more comfortable use. Carpet with
a wall base can be used to protect walls from scuffs and vacuum
cleaning.

Carpet base comes in different thicknesses and has found its usage in
both domestic and commercial applications. Generally a carpet base is
made of carpet rugs, urethane, synthetic fibers, Indian kemps and
rubbers. It is typically cut at 4" and has a ¾ strip of
colored nylon that is sewn to the top edge of the carpet.
Now days, carpet base is also used as an attractive alternative to
conventional baseboards made of vinyl, wood, or rubber. A carpet base
can be fabricated using the same or coordinating carpet as the floor
carpet for superior aesthetics and design continuity.
Advantages of a Carpet Base
Some of the important advantages of a carpet base include -
- Does not tear or crack
- No cleaning maintenance
- Installation time reduced in half
- No glue mess, as it is installed with a staple gun
Carpet Base Fabrication & Installation
- While using carpet, fabricate 6" high carpet base by cutting
through out the width of the carpet. Serge the top edge of the base
with approved surging yarn, which compliments the carpet. Surging
shall fully cover the top edge. Seam seal all the other edges.
- Install the carpet base prior to installing the carpet.
- Where seams are required, place them in inside corner.
- Fix the carpet base to walls using a manufacturer recommended
adhesive. Mechanically attach the base to wall at the bottom edge of
surging when required .
- Fix the loose ends of surged edge using a seam sealer.
Carpet Base Cutter
Carpet base cutter is an equipment that is used to cut carpet base. The
different machines include automatic carpet slitting and cutting
machines, which are primarily used for cutting the carpet base, samples,
runners and inserts. These machines are designed with stainless steel
circular blades that offer clean, consistent, and uniform cuts on
different types of carpets.
The carpet base cutters are designed with a special feature of
adjusting the blade position, which allows you to easily handle and
different widths and sizes. The ability to adjust blade positions allows
you to easily handle and cut varying sizes and widths. This feature also
helps in improving the productivity by eliminating the erratic and
uneven single cuts, and high labor costs.
