Ashfar
carpets have no particular design format except that they are in the
form of medallions. The typical tribal afshar has geometric medallions
and the modified ones have floral medallions. Light red, light ivory and
khaki are common in afshar rugs and runners. The colors are all natural.
Afshar carpets are famous for their typical tree design.
The size generally do not exceed 5'by 8' and are suitable as runners
and accent rugs. They are similar to Caucasian in style and color. The
most common pattern is diamond shape medallions joined together.
The Afshar carpets are woven on a horizontal loom. They are rather
tightly woven with a flat weave. The piles are woolen though the base is
cotton. Handspun wool is preferred for the right texture. They have a
symmetrical knotting pattern with a double weft. Few may have single
weft and a unique type of knot. The patterns are woven from memory.
